Naples | St. John Neumann Catholic High School athlete Jensen Jones was named in December by the Florida sports writers as the Florida State High School Athletic Association Class 2A football player of the year.
The Naples senior led the Celtics to the regional finals and finished the season 10-2, setting a team record for victories, winning their first playoff game, and advancing to the regional finals for the first time.
He started the season as a wide receiver, but later served as quarterback. He also played as a linebacker and long-snapper. Jensen passed for 1,525 yards and 14 touchdowns while he also rushed for 1,970 yards and 33 touchdowns. He averaged 9.8 yards per carry and a touchdown every 6.1 times he ran with the ball, including earning a receiving touchdown. On defense, he had 55 tackles, a sack, a pass break-up and a fumble recovery.
Jones is now a finalist for the Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Football award. The media will vote on the eight finalists to pick one winner announced at a later date.
The standout athlete also plays forward for the basketball team and is a catcher and centerfielder for the baseball team. Neumann Head Coach Damon Jones, Jensen’s father, was fifth in the class 2A voting for coach of the year.
