Senate ultrasound bill to be heard in committee

TALLAHASSEE | The Florida Senate has scheduled a key committee hearing on SB 2400, which requires abortion clinics to ask pregnant mothers if they would like to view ultrasound images of their unborn children.

The bill will be taken up on Tuesday, April 8 during an afternoon meeting of the Senate Health Regulation Committee.

Earlier this week, the Florida House of Representative passed three pro-life bills, including HB 257, a comprehensive abortion regulation bill that includes SB 2400’s ultrasound requirement. With the fifth week of the nine-week session coming to an end today, the scheduling of the bill is heartening news to pro-life advocates.

If SB 2400 survives the committee process and passes out of the Senate, watch for a repeat of last year’s showdown when the House approved a comprehensive abortion regulation bill, which the Senate refused to support. Instead, the Senate passed a bill that would have given judges greater guidance in denying requests to let minors undergo abortions without notifying their parents. Rep. Trey Traviesa (R-Tampa), sponsor of last year’s bill, refused to back the Senate’s stripped down version of his bill, dooming efforts to beef-up the parental notification bill. Traviesa is also sponsoring this year’s comprehensive abortion regulation bill.
