PENSACOLA | Bishop John H. Ricard, SSJ, reads the prayer of blessing June 4 as local dignitaries and members of the crew of the Juan Sebastian de Elcano prepare to place a wreath on the site of the sinking in Pensacola Bay of one of the ships from Don Tristan de Luna’s failed settlement expedition to Pensacola. The Elcano visited Pensacola as part of the 450th anniversary celebration of the city. As many as seven ships from the de Luna expedition are believed to have sunk during a September 1559 hurricane that doomed the settlement efforts.Prior to the hurricane, the de Luna party participated in the first documented Mass in what was to become the United States, when on Aug. 15, 1559, Dominican priests celebrated their safe arrival from Mexico.

At left is Dr. Judy Bense, interim president of University of West Florida. The university’s archeology department discovered the ships’ remains at the bottom of Pensacola Bay and is conducting an archeological study of the site. Msgr. Michael Reed, to the right of the bishop, serves on the committee for the 450th celebration.

CRESTVIEW | The youth group at Our Lady of Victory Parish in Crestview ends the school year with a car wash as part of a 30–hour famine the weekend of May 1–3. The youths planned the event after attending the diocesan youth conference in February. During the famine they fasted, held rallys, slept in cardboard boxes, participated in eucharistic adoration and discussed how God has impacted their lives. The car wash was their only access to showers. The youths actually had no food for more than 40 hours because they decided to end their fast with the body of Christ at the 10:30 Mass May 3.
