Bishop Ricard bids farewell to the Florida Catholic

Dear Friends of the Florida Catholic,

As we publish the final edition of the Florida Catholic and move toward a magazine format I want to pause and offer my thanks to the staff of the Florida Catholic and wish them well.

The Florida Catholic has courageously served the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee as its primary source of communication for several decades. It has been our way of bringing to the attention of our Catholic community the events which shape the Church, our nation and the world and, most of all, how these events are to be interpreted in light of the sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Church. Over the years this daunting task has been accomplished by the skilled and dedicated staff of the Florida Catholic. I know that I speak on behalf of the entire Catholic community in expressing our profound thanks and gratitude for a job well done.

Today, however, unprecedented challenges face the traditional media like the Florida Catholic. The realization of this compelled us to try harder to reach our Catholic faithful. And we must continue to examine with greater intensity alternative ways of reaching as many people as possible with the message of the Gospel. In order to do this we are exploring a magazine format. Empirical evidence suggests that for organizations like us, a magazine format attracts greater readership than a newspaper. It is our hope that with the new magazine, The Catholic Compass, we will continue to provide the highest quality journalism and reporting to Catholics of all ages and areas of interest.

My prayers, thanks and best wishes to all the staff of the Florida Catholic!

In Christ,
Most Rev. John H. Ricard, SSJ
Bishop of Pensacola-Tallahassee
