Youths help build home

John Carroll High School students participated in a Habitat for Humanity project this year. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit that helps the financially challenged in obtaining homes. As part of the John Carroll project, a house was built on a site in Fort Pierce.

Students, faculty and staff took turns with hammers and nails as part of the project, participating in lessons in construction, teamwork and outreach. The home was given to the Louidor family, selected by Habitat for Humanity. The project was sponsored by Joey Miller of St. Lucie Battery and Tire.

Serra Club adds weekend meetings

Jim Anderson and Larry Winker.

DELRAY BEACH | The Serra Club of South Palm Beach County has a new president and officers, and plans to implement a new monthly meeting schedule for those who may be interested in joining.

Jim Anderson (left in photo) is the new president, replacing Larry Winker (right in photo) who takes on the role of treasurer. “I have been involved with the Serra Club for the past 17 years,” said Anderson, a parishioner of Ascension Parish in Boca Raton. “My biggest goal this year is membership.”

The Serra Club of South Palm Beach County is affiliated with the international Catholic organization dedicated to fostering and promoting vocations to the religious life and supporting priests, said Bob Venezia of the organization. His wife, Rosemary, takes on the role as vice president this year.

At this point the group meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 7 a.m. for Mass at St. Vincent Ferrer Parish in Delray Beach. The Mass is followed by a breakfast meeting at the Holiday Inn Oceanside, 2809 S. Ocean Blvd., Highland Beach.

“We are hoping to move one of our meetings to Saturday,” said Anderson. “The meeting will be more convenient for those working during the week.”

Other officers installed include Michael Farenga, president elect; Annette Farenga, membership; Veronica Comrie, programs; Nancy Noonan, secretary; Fernande Camino, foundation representative; Gerri Preston, historian; and Richard Siegel, Lon Phillips and Barbara Hostomsky, trustees.

Joanne Lizarki, the group’s new communications person, is requesting on the behalf of the club “that all the faithful pray to Mary, mother of vocations, for success in helping encourage vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life.”

Alumni hold successful benefit

Pope John Paul II High School’s alumni association came up with a new idea to raise funds for the school — a fishing tournament. The “South County Shootout” was held out of the Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club Marina in Boca Raton and raised $15,000 to benefit the school’s tuition-assistance program and the athletic booster club. An array of boats and anglers took part in the one-day fishing competitions based on total weight of catch. First-place award went to “Off the Wall,” captained by John Anderson with team anglers Dale Malonie, Jill Johnson, Rob Deigman, Brad Runvan and Johnny Robinson.

“With hundreds of pounds of fish caught and hundreds of people in attendance, the South County Shootout was a huge success,” said Paul Cipolla, event co-chairman. The alumni group hopes to organize another fishing competition next year. An awards reception, auction and barbecue immediately followed the day of fishing. Former football coach Howard Schnellenberger, who held positions with the Univeristy of Oklahoma, University of Louisville, University of Miami, Balitmore Colts and Miami Dolphins, was featured guest.

Neill volunteered to help organize and stage school galas, festivals and fundraisers throughout the year. She also volunteers in the school cafeteria, serving more than 450 students daily and helps the cafeteria manager.

She has been married to David for the past 34 years and has six children: Ronald Bell, Leslie Golan, Erin (Neill) Cox, Mary Caityln Neill, Michael Neill and Rowan Neill.
