Sister Rose Germaine Guettler

Adrian Dominican Sister Rose Germaine Guettler, formerly known as Germaine Guettler, died Oct. 24 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. She was 96 and in the 80th year of her religious profession.

Sister Guetller was born in Cologne, Minn., to Edward and Elizabeth Guettler. She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Adrian and received a bachelor’s degree in English from Barry University in Miami Shores and a master’s of education from the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Sister Guettler spent two years ministering in education in Michigan and 74 years in Florida. In Florida, she served St. Patrick, Miami; St. Anthony, Fort Lauderdale; St. Ann, West Palm Beach; Blessed Sacrament, Tallahassee; St. Joseph, Miami Shores; St. Anastasia, Fort Pierce; St. Helen, Vero Beach and Trinity Catholic, Tallahassee. She was congregation school supervisor for seven years, and supervisor for the Archdiocese of Miami for three years. She became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in 2004.

She is survived by two sisters, Dolores Jacquin and Marie Hoeffner, both of Fort Pierce; and two nieces, Sister Dorothy Guettler and Sister Rose Bernadette Hoeffner, both Adrian Dominican Sisters. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Catherine Chapel Oct. 28, followed by burial at the congregation cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 E. Sister Judith Shield

Adrian Dominican Sister Judith Shield, a former educator in Florida for 48 years, died Oct. 24 at the community’s home in Michigan. She was 91 and in her 72nd year of religious life.

Sister Shield, a native of Chicago, was the daughter of Harold and Mabel Marie (Clark) Shield. She graduated from Aquinas High School in Chicago, and received a bachelor’s degree in history from Siena Heights College (University) in Michigan, and a master’s in economics from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Sister Shield spent a combined 56 years ministering in education in Michigan, Illinois and Florida.

In Florida, she taught at St. Patrick, Miami Beach, from 1940 to 1943; St. Mary, Fort Walton Beach, from 1958 to 1964, where she was also a principal; and St. Thomas Aquinas, Fort Lauderdale, from 1964 to 1969. Locally, Sister Shield worked as an assistant principal and teacher at Cardinal Newman High School from 1969 to 1970. From 1970 to 1994 she served Barry College (University) in Miami Shores as a teacher, chair of the business department, associate dean and assistant to the vice president of institutional advancement.

She is survived by loving nieces and nephews. A funeral liturgy was held at St. Catherine Chapel Oct. 30, followed by burial at the congregation cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 E. Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, MI 49221.

Sister Mary Meegan

Sister Mary Meegan died Oct. 19 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. She was 83 and in the 63rd year of religious life. Sister Meegan was born in Chicago and graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Adrian. She received a bachelor’s in math from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and a master’s in math from the University of Florida in Gainesville. She also earned degrees from Aquinas Theological Institute in Iowa.

Sister Meegan spent 41 years ministering in education in Florida and Illinois. In Florida, she taught at Rosarian Academy in West Palm Beach from 1946 to 1947, St. Anthony High School in Fort Lauderdale from 1947 to 1952 and St. Anastasia High School in Fort Pierce 1952 to 1954, where she was also an assistant principal.

Sister Meegan became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2008. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Catherine Chapel Oct. 22 and burial was at the congregation cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 E. Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, MI 49221.

Father George Batista

Father George Batista, who assisted at various parishes in the Diocese of Palm Beach for nearly a decade, died Oct. 1 after a brief illness.

A native of Cuba, Father Batista was ordained in December 1983. He was originally from the Diocese of Newark, N.J. Locally, he served St. Luke in Palm Spring from 1994 to 1998, St. Sebastian in Sebastian from 1998 to 1999, St. Joseph in Stuart form 1999 to 2001, and St. Rita in Wellington from 2000 to 2002. He was living in Fort Lauderdale at the time of his death. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Oct. 25, 10 a.m., at St. Luke Parish, 2892 S. Congress Ave., Lake Worth.

Father Christopher Figuero, 68

Father Christopher (Cristobal) Figuero, 68, a priest of the Archdiocese of Seville, Spain, who assisted in the Diocese of Palm Beach for nearly 20 years, died Aug. 10. Father Figuero was visiting and assisting at Holy Cross in Indiantown this summer. He left Florida the first week of August and was visiting the Holy Land with a group of priests when he died of a heart attack.

Father Figuero was born in Burgos, Spain, and professed vows in 1960 as a Franciscan. He was ordained an order priest Jan. 3, 1968.

In the United States, he studied at the University of the District of Columbia in Washington D.C., where he received a master’s in psychology and education, and a doctorate in psychology. From 1978 to 1988, he served as a chaplain in the U.S. Army. His passion for teaching led him to education ministry, and he also taught at colleges in New Jersey and Alaska.

In the early 1990s, he came to the Diocese of Palm Beach. He served primarily at St. Juliana in West Palm Beach, St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary and, most recently, Holy Cross in Indiantown.

Father Nestor Rodriguez, pastor of Holy Cross and a friend of Father Figuero, described the priest as “down-to-earth, very spiritual, passionate about celebrating the Eucharist and proud to be of Spanish roots.”

Recently, Father Figuero had begun working on a building project in Spain designed to help the elderly and exchange students. He also authored a book on Franciscans in South Florida.

His funeral took place in Seville. A memorial Mass was celebrated Aug. 19 at St. Juliana, with Father Rodriguez and Father Alfredo Hernandez serving as main celebrants.

Father Richard Allen Schaefer, 66

Father Richard Schaefer died July 13, five days before his 67th birthday.

A native of Philadelphia, Father Schafer was the only child of the late Charles Frederick Schaefer and Dorothy Brennan Schaefer.

As a young man in the early 1960s, he began his formation to the priesthood as a novice in the Pallottine (New York) Order, founded by Saint Vincent Pallotti.

Delaying his formation, he entered Merrimack College in Andover, Mass., where he graduated in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree in humanities. He earned a master’s degree in psychology in 1968 from Assumption College in Worcester, Mass. Father Schaefer also attended classes at St. Charles Seminary in Overbrook, Pa., and worked on a doctorate in psychology/administration at the University of Pennsylvania.

His professional experience began in education. He taught at a Catholic high school in Riverside, N. J., and at a junior college in Philadelphia for three years, and in 1970 he served as professor and dean of students at Valley Forge Military Academy and College in Wayne, Pa. Leaving his post in 1991, he moved to Boynton Beach and enrolled in St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary the following year.

Father Schafer was ordained Dec. 13, 1996, by Bishop J. Keith Symons at the Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola in Palm Beach Gardens. As part of his first assignment, he served as a parochial vicar at St. Luke Parish in Palm Springs.

His many appointments over the years included St. Lucie Parish in Port St. Lucie, Emmanuel Parish in Delray Beach and St. Thomas More Parish in Boynton Beach. He also served as chaplain for St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach. Most recently Father Schaefer had been assisting at St. John of the Cross in Vero Beach.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 17 at St. John of the Cross. He is survived by three aunts, an uncle and a cousin.

Sister Madeleine Sophie McLeod, 81

Sister Madeleine Sophie McLeod, who worked in the Diocese of Palm Beach for 12 years, died July 20 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. She was 81 and in the 62nd year of her religious profession.

Sister McLeod was born in Chicago to Alan and Helen (Carrol) McLeod. She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Adrian and received a bachelor’s degree in English from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, and a master’s degree in English from DePaul University in Chicago.

Ministering in education for 52 years, 21 years in Florida, Sister McLeod served schools in Fort Walton Beach, West Palm Beach and Boca Raton. Her appointments also included positions in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and Puerto Rico.

In the Diocese of Palm Beach, Sister McLeod served as co–principal of Rosarian Academy in West Palm Beach from 1978 to 1983. She was dean of students at Pope John Paul II High School in Boca Raton from 1983 to 1990. In 2004, she lived in a private residence in Boca Raton and came to the Dominican Life Center on a temporary basis in 2008.

A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Catherine Chapel July 23. She was buried at the congregation cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 E. Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, MI 49221.

Sister John Baptist Dowd, 93

Sister John Baptist Dowd, who served St. Anastasia School and St. Mark Parish in Fort Pierce, died June 21 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. She was 93 and in the 75th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Dowd, formerly known as Mary Madeline Dowd, was born in Emmett, Mich. She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Adrian, received a bachelor’s degree in Latin from Siena Heights College (University) in Michigan and a master’s degree in education from the University of Detroit.

She spent 67 years ministering in education in Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida. She served at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Melbourne from 1964 to 1973. Sister Dowd was also a teacher at St. Anastasia School for three years, and religious education coordinator of St. Mark Parish for 26 years. In 1999, she became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian.

She is survived by two sisters, Sister Margaret Dowd of the Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary community in Port Huron, Mich.; and Ellen Bates of Carmel Valley, Calif. She was preceded in death by an aunt, Sister Maurice Dowd, an Adrian Dominican Sister.

A funeral liturgy was offered in St. Catherine Chapel June 25 and burial was in the congregation cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 E. Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, MI 49221.

Msgr. William J. Carey, 90

Msgr. William J. Carey, pastor emeritus of St. Paul Parish in Cranston, R. I., who has been living in the Diocese of Palm Beach since his retirement, died June 13 at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Palm Beach after a short illness. He was 90. He served the Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola, assisting for the past 13 years. A Mass of Christian burial was concelebrated for the repose of his soul June 19 at St. Paul Parish in Cranston. A memorial Mass was celebrated at the cathedral in Palm Beach Gardens June 21.

Sister Marguerite O’Callaghan, 83

Sister Marguerite O’Callaghan, formerly known as Sister Francis Patrice O’Callaghan, died May 29 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich., at the age of 83. She was in the 53rd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister O’Callaghan ministered in Florida 13 years, serving St. Patrick in Miami from 1958 to 1964, the Florida Mission Chapter from 1993 to 1994 and Barry University in Miami from 1996 to 2002. She lived in a private residence in West Palm Beach before becoming a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2004.

She was born in Alpena, Mich., to Frank and Frances (Donovan) O’Callaghan. She graduated from St. Bernard High School in Alpena and received a bachelor’s degree in English from Siena Heights College (University) in Michigan. She spent 15 years ministering in education in Illinois; Michigan; Florida; West Virginia; and Nassau, Bahamas; and also ministered in secretarial services for 23 years in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois and Michigan.

Sister O’Callaghan is survived by three brothers: John O’Callaghan of Ocala; Patrick O’Callaghan of Flushing, Mich.; and Thomas O’Callaghan of Eatonville, Wash. Her sister is Kathryn Schmanski of Alpena. She has three cousins who are also Adrian Dominicans: Sister Edith Kathleen Zemke, Sister Joan Donovan and Sister Patricia Anne Lynch.

A funeral liturgy was held at St. Catherine Chapel June 2 and burial was at the congregation cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 E. Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, MI 49221.

Sister Ellen M. Murphy, 84

Dominican Sister Ellen M. Murphy, formerly known as Rita Anne Murphy, died March 1 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. She was 84 and ministered in religious life for 66 years.

Sister Murphy was born in Toledo, Ohio, to William and Mary Murphy. She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Adrian, Mich., and received a bachelor’s degree in Latin from Barry College (now University) in Miami, a master’s degree in Latin from Loyola University in Chicago and a master’s degree in education from the University of Dayton in Ohio.

She spent 49 years as an educator in Illinois, Florida, Michigan and Ohio. While living in Florida, she worked as an educator for 10 years: as a teacher at St. Patrick in Miami Beach from 1947 to 1952; at Central Catholic High School in Fort Lauderdale from 1958 to 1961; and at Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach from 1961 to 1963.

She became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 1998 and is survived by loving nieces and nephews.

A funeral liturgy was held in St. Catherine Chapel March 5, followed by a burial in the congregation cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 E. Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, MI 49221.

Msgr. John Daly, 95

DELRAY BEACH | Msgr. John Daly, a retired educator and pastor who served as a weekend priest at this city’s Emmanuel Parish from 1988 through 2004, died here March 6. He was 95.

Msgr. Daly was born in North Pelham, N.Y., in 1912 and attended the archdiocesan seminary at Dunwoodie. He was ordained to the priesthood Sept. 20, 1936. He received a master’s degree in religious education from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and was New York archdiocesan assistant coordinator for religious education from 1937 to 1941, before entering his higher education ministry.

He was a professor and an assistant spiritual director at Cathedral College (1941- 1944), theology instructor at Fordham University (1941-1943) and Marymount College (1962-1964), and a counselor at Columbia University (1944-1955). Beginning in 1955 until his retirement to Florida in 1985, he served as an assistant pastor and later pastor at several parishes in New York. He was named a monsignor in 1983.

Msgr. Daly is survived by a nephew, Michael Daly of New York, and great-nieces and great-nephews. A prayer service and funeral Mass was celebrated March 8 at Emmanuel Church. He was buried at Queen of Peace Mausoleum in Royal Palm Beach. Memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel Parish Outreach Program. Call 561-496-2480 for information.

Carmelite Father William Smith, 79

Father William Smith, a Carmelite who retired to Lourdes-Noreen McKeen Retirement Center in West Palm Beach in 2007, after more than 50 years of active ministry, died Feb. 17 at the age of 79.

Born July 6, 1929, to the late Joseph and Kathleen Smith of Chicago, he enrolled at the Mount Carmel Preparatory Seminary in Niagara Falls, Ontario, at age 16 and first professed vows in Aug. 1948. He was ordained to the priesthood May 29, 1954, at St. Clara Church in Chicago.

During his first years as a priest, he taught at Mount Carmel High School and D’Youville College in Buffalo, N.Y. In 1975 he received his first assignment as pastor, moving to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Houston. In 1981, he began a nine-year tenure at St. Gertrude in Stockton, Calif. Between 1990 and 1994, he served as pastor of St. Raphael Parish in Los Angeles. He served Transfiguration Parish in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico, until retirement.

Father Smith is survived by his sister, Marilyn Hogan, and her husband, Dick Hogan, of Wellington; his brother Robert Smith of Chicago; and many loving nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Thérèse de Lisieux Parish in Wellington Feb. 21. He was buried at Venice Memorial Gardens in Venice.
