‘Giant’ summer fun at Hope CommUnity Center

The tale centers on a boy and his father and their encounters with the giant Abiyoyo. The play was part of the weeklong summer youth program sponsored by the center for ages 6-10. To help learn leadership skills, 15 teenagers assisted as “camp” counselors. “Instead of watching TV all day, the camp gets their imaginations active,” said Sister of Notre Dame de Namur Cathy Gorman. The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and the diocesan Office of Advocacy and Justice awarded the program grants totaling $2,500.

ORLANDO | Spanish-language radio station Buena Nueva 104.1 FM will host a weeklong on-air fundraiser beginning July 28.

From 7 a.m. to noon each weekday, listeners will be able to phone in and pledge financial support to the station.

“It’s going to be a special radio program all week,” said Marjorie Rosa, station director. “It will be really fresh. We will have fun and laugh a lot.”

A special live on-air event is planned for Aug. 2 at St. Augustine Parish in Casselberry.

Buena Nueva FM hosted its first radiothon in January, raising nearly $20,000. Tomás Evans, director of Catholic Hispanic Communications for the diocese, anticipates that this radiothon will bring in $20,000 to $25,000.

Listener-supported Buena Nueva FM has lots of loyal fans according to Rosa. “We are their company. They can laugh. We are like family,” she said.

Buena Nueva FM reaches most of the nine-county area of the Diocese of Orlando. The station can be accessed through the Internet at www.buenanueva.fm. To phone in a pledge during the radiothon, call 1-888-656-9443.

40th anniversary time capsule blessed

Bishop Thomas Wenski blesses the time capsule that was later buried on the grounds of the chancery to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Diocese of Orlando. He was joined by the priests who concelebrated the June 18 Mass at the cathedral. Father Robert Webster, diocesan master of ceremonies, is on the left.

Father Patrick O’Doherty noted that the day was the celebration of the Diocese of Orlando’s 40th anniversary. The churchs bells would ring at noon, but he asked everyone to join him in saying the word “bong” three times in unison. With laughter and chuckles, “bong, bong, bong,“ was said by the morning worshippers.

TV Mass canceled; other options cited

Bishop Thomas Wenski has authorized the cancellation of the Diocese of Orlando TV Mass/Misa Televisada beginning Aug. 31. In recent years, the TV Mass Ministry production costs and airtime have increased tremendously. At the same time, other Sunday Masses are broadcast and are locally available through broadcast, satellite or cable TV.

Each Sunday, viewers in the Diocese of Orlando can access two Sunday Masses — one provided by Eternal Word Television Network and another by Catholic Community Television Network, a ministry of St. Paul Parish in Leesburg. Some parishes, such as St. Anthony in Lakeland, also stream Sunday Mass through their Web sites. Father Esau Garcia is working with Azteca America to broadcast Spanish–language Sunday Mass live from Holy Cross Parish in Orlando.

These Masses, which have a one–hour time slot as opposed to the half–hour slot of the diocesan TV Mass, are professionally produced and, in keeping with the liturgical norms, are either broadcast live or are recorded live and broadcast later on the same day.

Bishop Wenski said, “I am grateful to Father Robert Hoeffner, Father Miguel Gonzalez and the other priests — along with the choirs, servers and lectors — who have assisted this ministry so generously. This action represents good stewardship of the resources and avoids unnecessary duplication of efforts and expenses.”

Either through Leesburg-based CCTN or the national cable station EWTN, TV Mass remains available to most in the Orlando Diocese. Check station listings for your area.
