ORLANDO | In August, pop singer Chris Brown, 20, was sentenced to five years probation and 180 days of community labor for assaulting girlfriend Rihanna, 21, also a pop star, last February.

Catholic Online, carried a Chicago Tribune article that queried local teens about Brown’s assault of his girlfriend and many indicated acceptance or approval of his actions.

Police investigators learned of two other incidents related to domestic violence the pair had been involved in that had not been reported.

Break the Cycle states on its Web site that one in three teens will experience abuse in a dating relationship and two-thirds of them will never report it to anyone.

Joyce Hawkins, Brown’s mother, told Larry King on his self-titled television show she was “shocked” as her son had never been a violent person. Hawkins, the survivor of domestic abuse herself, said she believed witnessing that abuse as a young child had no effect on Brown.

A report on “Violence and the Family” by the American Psychological Association states that a child’s exposure to the father abusing the mother is the strongest risk factor for transmitting violent behavior from one generation to the next.

Dating violence is more prevalent than many realize. According to safespace.org, teens and young adults are often the most at risk for domestic violence. It affects many people in many ways and it can happen anywhere and to anyone.

Many are aware of, and take precautions against, abuse via the Internet. However, cell phones as well can be tools of abuse. Because phone calls, texting and messaging allow constant communication, cell phones can be a powerful tool for abusers to monitor and control girlfriends or boyfriends day and night.

Catholic Online recommends the "That's Not Cool" Web site, to learn about drawing the digital line. If in immediate danger, safespace.org advises calling 911 or the National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline, 1-866-331-9474.
