Butterflies help save newbornsPosted: 06.24.09 A Safe Haven for Newborns is turning to butterflies to help fund its efforts to rescue newborn children from abandonment. Magical Butterfly Memories will release live butterflies at special occasions, such as birthdays, weddings and funerals, and use a portion of the net proceeds to fund the work of A Safe Haven for Newborns. The nonprofit organization, founded by Miami resident Nick Silverio, strives to tell mothers in trouble about Florida’s “safe haven” law, which allows them to leave their newborns at hospitals or fire stations rather than abandon them in dumpsters. “Public awareness is saving lives,” said Silverio, noting the group has saved 131 newborns so far. “They now have an opportunity to become the next president of the U.S., Supreme Court justice, find a cure for cancer or, most important, be a great mom or dad for their children.” Silverio founded A Safe Haven for Newborns in memory of his wife of 31 years, Gloria, who was killed in a car accident. He and Gloria were unable to have children of their own, but were godparents to 14 children and nurtured all the nieces and nephews in their family. Magical Butterfly Memories grew out of Silverio’s desire to provide funding for the Safe Haven project while at the same time symbolically expressing the “new beginning” that it represents. “One day at the cemetery, a single monarch butterfly flew by. I thought butterflies could be a wonderful way to help save little lives, as well as create magical memories for others by releasing live butterflies at special occasions,” Silverio said. Local pastor awarded Seton MedalPosted: 06.13.09 Father Daniel Kubala, pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Miami, was one of 51 recipients of this year’s Seton Legacy of Charity medal. The award recognizes people for their charitable works in the spirit of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. During his studies at Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Md., Father Kubala developed a deep and sustaining love of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, and he has passed it on to his parishioners. Their many parish endeavors and activities have included writing and printing a novena to the saint, writing an original play about her, and constructing a beautiful shrine to her on the parish grounds. Father Kubala also leads a large annual pilgrimage from Miami to the Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg. “It is evident that, through the direct influence of Father Kubala, both the students and adults who make this pilgrimage are well instructed in the knowledge of Elizabeth Ann and that her spirit permeates their parish and personal lives,” the award presentation stated. The weekend of July 31-Aug. 2 will highlight the yearlong bicentennial celebrations marking St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s founding of the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph’s, the first new community for religious women to be established in the United States. Cruise raises funds for lifePosted: 06.13.09 A Lenten cruise-pilgrimage to the lands of the Bible – Egypt, Turkey, Israel and Greece – yielded $10,000 for the archdiocese’s respect life ministry, an amount that will be used to purchase ultrasound equipment for two of the ministry’s five crisis pregnancy centers. The goal is to have an ultrasound machine in all of the offices so that pregnant women contemplating abortion can see the reality of the unborn child in their womb. The respect life Lenten pilgrimage was the first of what are hoped to be other fundraising pilgrimages. One is being planned to the Passion play in Oberammergau, Germany, in July 2010. Another is being planned as a Thanksgiving pilgrimage to the Holy Land in November 2010. For more information on the pilgrimages, contact Suzanne Taskowitz of CruiseOne at 1-888-664-2664.
