Haitian youths to rally for Jesus

The second annual youth rally for Haitian Catholic young people will take place Saturday, Aug. 2, beginning at 8:30 a.m., at Msgr. Edward Pace High School, 15600 N.W. 32 Ave., Miami Gardens.

Participants will include young people from different churches in the Haitian community and three young, dynamic priests who seek to provide an alternative to the overwhelming violence affecting society.

About 500 young people from Broward County to Homestead attended a similar rally last year at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens. The theme of this year’s rally is “With Jesus, You Will Shine.”

Artist’s work graces Jerusalem chapel

Sheila E. Lichacz and Franciscan Father Victorio Bocello.

South Florida–based artist Sheila E. Lichacz met with Franciscan Father Victorio Bocello, superior at the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher in Old Jerusalem at the end of May. Her artwork, “30 Pieces of Silver,” now hangs in the Crusader Chapel of the basilica. “We have been told that this unprecedented accomplishment is a first for a living artist,” said Lichacz’s husband, John. Another one of Lichacz’s paintings hangs at the Shrine of the First Miracle at Cana, Galilee. The Panamanian–born Lichacz, who suffers from recurring brain tumors, was recuperating from her 14th brain surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville when she was asked to bring the painting “immediately” to the Holy Land. She credits God for her miraculous recoveries and is very devoted to the Franciscans and Father Junipero Serra.

Camillus starts work on new campus

Construction crews begin demolition of a former glass factory July 7 to make way for the future campus of Camillus House at N.W. Seventh Avenue between 15th and 17th Streets in Miami. Completion is scheduled for 2010 at which time Camillus House will consolidate its services for the chronically homeless.

In early July, Camillus House started the demolition of the buildings on its newly acquired property at Northwest Seventh Avenue between 15th and 17th streets in Miami.

The demolition clears the way for construction of a new 3.1-acre campus on the site, which was recently transferred from the University of Miami to the state of Florida, which in turn granted Camillus House a 60-year lease on the land.

Construction of the new campus is expected to be completed in 2010, at which time Camillus House will consolidate onto the property an expanded array of services for the chronically homeless, including a total of 340 beds for individuals who will be provided a wide range of social services and clinical treatment programs.

The timing of the transfer enabled Camillus House to qualify for $20.1 million in tax credits through the Florida Housing Finance Corporation, which will fund construction of an 80-unit apartment building on the new campus. This building will provide permanent housing for Camillus clients.

This expansion also will enable Camillus House to sell its existing, obsolete 20,000-square-foot building at 726 N.E. First Ave. Proceeds from this sale will be donated to Camillus House’s ongoing $88 million capital campaign to build and operate the new campus. This campaign has already raised more than 50 percent of the private-sector philanthropic goal, including significant gifts from corporate, foundation and individual donors.

Camillus House has provided humanitarian services to persons who are poor and homeless in Miami-Dade County for 48 years. It was established by the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd in 1960.

New business dean at St. Thomas University

J. Antonio Villamil, former U.S. undersecretary of commerce for economic affairs, has been appointed the new dean of St. Thomas University’s School of Business, effective Aug. 1.

Villamil’s leadership qualities and globally recognized expertise in economics, public policy and international trade transcend both the government and private sectors. In 1989, he was the first Cuban-American to serve as undersecretary of commerce for the nation. He also served as chairman of the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors of Florida and as director of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development for Florida.

More recently, he served as chief executive officer of the Washington Economics Group, a Coral Gables-based financial advisor firm that he created in 1993. He will remain a senior consultant to the group, providing consulting services to Florida and Latin American governments and multinationals, while working as dean at St. Thomas.

“St. Thomas University is a leader in ethical business education,” Villamil said. “I see my job as a very close working relationship with (St. Thomas) faculty and students. In providing strategic direction to the school, I plan to maximize the faculty’s strengths in teaching, research and outreach to the south Florida, as well as the global community.”

The award was presented June 11 during the Miami Jewish Home and Hospital’s 14th annual interfaith seminar on ministering to the elderly, a free event which brings clergy, medical experts and social work professionals together.
