It’s Super Saturday, take me out to the ballgame…Combination of sports, Christian music makes for fun night at Marlins’ Super Saturday. MIAMI GARDENS | Sports and Christian music made for a winning combination Aug. 16 at Dolphins Stadium, when the Florida Marlins’ 2-1 win against the Chicago Cubs was followed by fireworks and a performance by Christian artist Jaci Velasquez. Velasquez was the first Christian artist to perform as part of the Marlins’ Super Saturday concert series. Her excited fans crowded around the stage set up in the infield, swaying to the beat of heartfelt tunes such as “On My Knees,” “Heavenly Place,” and her Spanish mega hit, “Como Se Cura Una Herida” (“How to Heal a Wound”). Watch the video by Radio Paz 830 AMAt the end of her performance, Velasquez joined in a duet with Caro Fernandez, a 2008 graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes Academy in Miami, who won the 2007 Voice of An Angel contest sponsored by God Squad Communications. Voice of an Angel bills itself as “the singing competition with a higher purpose.” Fernandez will attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston and is now recording her first Christian music CD. Prior to the game, 15 Catholics between the ages of 13 and 23 auditioned for this year’s Voice of an Angel competition, and some received callbacks to attend a second set of auditions Sept. 6 at Universal Studios’ Rock the Universe Christian music festival. Velasquez and Father Alberto Cutié, general director of Pax Catholic Communications, also signed autographs before the game. Radio Paz, a part of Pax Catholic Communications, and the God Squad helped the Marlins promote the Super Saturday event. The Florida Catholic also helped to advertise it and donated most of its ticket allotment to members of St. John Bosco Parish in Little Havana. Baseball fan and Miami Auxiliary Bishop Felipe Estévez also attended the game.
