Pope Benedict XVI’s recent encyclical “Caritas in Veritate” (“Charity in Truth”) appears to be gaining traction among lay Catholics in the business world.
Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Carl Anderson focused on the teachings in the July encyclical in his address today at an international meeting on ethical business practices in Rimini, Italy. Anderson said the [...]

Abortion and the health care reform debate

by Denise O'Toole Kelly on July 29, 2009

in Action, Politics

It’s unclear at this writing whether any version of health care reform will be up for a vote in either chamber of Congress before lawmakers take their August break. A vote is more likely in the House than in the Senate, though.
That’s why an Action Alert sent out today by the Florida Catholic Conference, which [...]

Pope’s teaching vs. American political pigeonholes

by Denise O'Toole Kelly on July 15, 2009

in Action, Politics

The two big national and international stories I worked with while editing this week’s issue of the Florida Catholic were the July 7 release of Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical “Caritas in Veritate” (in English, “Charity in Truth”) and President Barack Obama’s July 10 visit with the pope. I was blessed to have a father at home through my formative years. Some of my younger brothers [...]

In 13 years as a sportswriter and sports copy-desker, I’ve covered many a national signing day, during which high-school athletes sign national letters of intent to make official their college choices. They are normally big ceremonies that draw big crowds. Some even get airtime on ESPN.
What if we made as big a deal about high-school [...]

The marriage ceremony often recalls how the love between bride and groom should mirror Jesus’ love for his bride, the Church.
One article I stumbled upon at Catholic.net gave another, more explicit, example of that love. Couples in Herzegovina make a crucifix a part of their ceremony, a part of their home and a part of [...]

As the summer season cranks up, many people choose to hit the road to relax and recharge.
Some people choose to also recharge their faith during a break. A common way is with a retreat. Each diocese in Florida has at least one retreat center, and many religious orders also host retreats. Catholicity.com has some retreat [...]
